Prioritizing Data for Manageable Scope : Critical Data

About Course

This course is designed for professionals who help define, prioritize, validate, and maintain Critical Data across business, Data Management, governance, and technical teams. It addresses a common practical problem: organizations can identify hundreds or thousands of “important” data elements, but still struggle to define a manageable and defensible Critical Data scope.

The course develops a business-led approach. It starts with business consequences, reports, decisions, and KPIs, then establishes criticality criteria and identifies the data elements that genuinely qualify. Participants work with different CDE types and representation levels, prioritize a deliverable first scope, trace dependencies through data chains, and connect business elements to logical and physical implementations. The course then addresses accountability, controls, issue handling, and review so the approved Critical Data scope remains usable when business processes, systems, products, or regulations change.

Course Content

Critical Data
Critical Data means different things in IT operations, data protection, security, and Data Management. This topic defines criticality in Data Management and the business consequences that justify it. It distinguishes the abstraction levels at which data elements are represented and the roles they play along data chains. The topic also examines criticality criteria and explains how data domains and data sets provide context for locating relevant implementations.

Critical Data Identification
This topic presents a seven-step process for identifying and prioritizing Critical Data Elements. It begins by defining the initiative scope and agreeing on criticality criteria. Business reports and decisions provide the starting points for identifying ultimate elements. The process then narrows the candidate list, traces upstream dependencies, classifies contributing elements, and maps business definitions to logical and physical structures. The resulting documentation supports justified criticality decisions and manageable implementation scope.

Critical Data Maintenance
This topic examines how to maintain Critical Data after identification and approval. It establishes ownership and accountability across data chains, connects criticality to Data Quality controls and issue management, and introduces arrangements for reviewing Critical Data Elements when business or technical circumstances change. Practical exercises support the creation of a maintenance register containing owners, stewards, quality rules, review triggers, and versioned decisions.
