This is Course 4 of the Program “Establishing a Data Management Function.”

 

This course is an advanced training course for data management professionals. This course has several objectives:

  • Share knowledge and coach the development of practical skills in developing a data governance capability (DG) and/or function
  • Explain key components that constitute this capability
  • Assist in developing a DG capability that fits a company’s needs and resources

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop or adjust a data management framework for your company’s needs

Course Content

Introducing the “Data Management Star” Implementation Method
This section provides a high-level overview of the “Data Management Star” implementation method and its Step 2. This method forms the basis for the program “Establishing a Data Management Function.” In this section, we introduce Step 2 of this method, “Defining a DM strategy and designing capabilities.

Introducing a Data Governance Capability
This section explains the differences between “data management” and “data governance.” It also presents 12 data governance sub-capabilities and their relationships with a data lifecycle. In the end, we present six components of the data governance capability that we will develop in this course.

Designing Data Governance Deliverables
In this section, we will consider three key data governance deliverables: data (management) strategy and roadmap, plans for data-related initiatives, and data governance maturity assessment.

Defining Data Governance Regulations
This section highlights the list of the data governance regulations that we discuss in the consequent sections.

Defining Data Management Processes
This section introduces the terms “process” and “data management and/or governance process.” We identify various types of processes per organizational level of authority. This section presents four key data governance processes.

Identifying Data Management Roles
This section explains two terms: “role “and “data management role.” It represents the structure and accountabilities of governing bodies and functional and virtual roles. We discuss eight factors that influence role design.

Choosing a Data Governance Tool
This section explains several definitions of several terms “tool,” “need,” “requirement,” “solution,” “software product,” and “functionality. Then, we demonstrate how to choose a data governance tool by defining IT solutions, products, and functionality that meet a company’s needs and requirements.

Specifying a Data Governance Budget
This section discusses the factors influencing the data governance budget and represents the budget structure.

Developing Further Steps
This section demonstrates a method to assess the current and desired statuses of the data governance capability. It also advises on drafting an action plan to reach the desired level.
